Political Vision: The 10 Point Plan for Financing Biodiversity
Point 10 – Partnerships for Biodiversity
Denmark: The Danish Biodiversity Partnership
What
Recognizing the complexity and interconnected ecological, economic, and social challenges posed by the biodiversity crisis, the Ministry of Environment of Denmark launched the Danish Biodiversity Partnership. The Partnership was initiated in 2023 as a broadly, fast-working partnership with representatives from industry confederations, financial institutions, NGOs, research institutions and trade unions, working together to find solutions for the biodiversity crisis.
Goal
The Partnership’s primary goal is to enhance the engagement and impact of companies with regards to biodiversity interventions. It aims to achieve this by engaging relevant national stakeholders on the biodiversity agenda to formulate targeted recommendations for businesses, national authorities, and researchers with regards to their impacts and dependencies on biodiversity. The overall ambition of the recommendations is to support the development of corporate initiatives that reduce the private sector’s impact on biodiversity.
The Partnership represents a wide spectrum of national stakeholders with both national and global value chains.
Recent activities
From 2023, The Biodiversity Partnership will deliver the following activities:
Recommendations for Danish companies on how to act on biodiversity related issues in the best way.
Recommendations to authorities about perceived barriers and possible incentive structures.
Recommendations for research and knowledge institutions on knowledge needs.
Recommendations for any further efforts for the partnership, including any reduction of sector-specific or thematic working groups/sub-partnerships.
Benefits
By engaging across multiple sectors, the Partnership is able to bring multiple stakeholders into discussions on addressing the biodiversity crisis and thereby formulate more comprehensive and integrated approaches towards halting and reversing biodiversity loss. Prioritizing collaboration means that learnings can be transferred across sectors. The Partnership begins with the recognition of the complexity and interconnectedness of the climate crisis; therefore, it aims to formulate solutions that respond to that complex challenge.
Lessons learned
The Biodiversity Partnership was initiated in August 2023 and the preliminary work has highlighted that several Danish companies experience that even though some are engaged in facilitating change or progress in relation to biodiversity, it can be difficult to define where to prioritize interventions, how to define targets and actions, and how to document the actual impact.
