Political Vision: The 10 Point Plan for Financing Biodiversity

Point 6 – Philanthropy

The United Kingdom: Projects for Nature (P4N)

What
Projects for Nature (P4N) is a new online platform, which matches corporate donations to nature recovery projects, hand-selected by Defra, Natural England and Environment Agency. P4N establishes a pioneering partnership with the Council for Sustainable Business, Crowdfunder, and Accenture, to bring together government, expert bodies, NGOs, businesses, and the public to fund nature. The new platform will connect businesses who have shown leadership in addressing their nature impact, such as Lloyd's Banking Group, with nature recovery projects that best align with our domestic and international environmental commitments.

P4N uses robust business and project eligibility criteria to ensure integrity of the platform and avoid greenwashing. Businesses should demonstrate that they are following the mitigation hierarchy, and investment in P4N is additional to reducing and mitigating their nature impact. In the pilot phase, we are looking for businesses to donate a minimum of £250K towards the projects.

Projects available on the platform are focused on key themes around nature recovery, such as conservation, nature-based solutions, access to nature, and technology that supports nature. In the pilot phase, projects are delivered by NGOs with a strong track record of delivering successful nature recovery projects, to ensure delivery risk is minimized.

Goal
P4N’s goal is to mobilize corporate donations to support nature restoration and conservation [in England] and foster cross-sector collaboration. P4N also aims to define what is appropriate use of corporate philanthropy within a business’ transition plan to Net Zero and Nature Positive.

Recent activities
The P4N platform pilot phase will be launched at COP28.

Benefits
By mobilizing corporate donations through the creation of a private and public partnership, P4N aims to enable philanthropy to operate on a larger scale and in a facilitated, effective way. P4N also helps to establish links between local communities, business and their surrounding environment, helping to strengthen people and business’ connection with the natural world.

Next steps and lessons learned
By the end of the pilot phase, we will generate learning about the role that government can play in mobilizing corporate donations and discover the type of project suitable for this funding.

Projects for Nature is a sister project of Get Nature Positive (GNP) – www.getnaturepositive.com. The GNP was helping businesses understand and address their impacts on nature and biodiversity. P4N will be marketed alongside the GNP as a dual toolkit for business and public.
